Partner Project: Did my words change the world?

Personally I was very intrigued by the project I was teamed up with. Working with Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) and their teen parenting/pregnancy program and helping to spread the word on their new expansion of the program made me feel like I was actually making a different. Do I think it will make a change in the world? Who knows. I think it will make a change for those who need assistance in the cases that they help with.

Having sent informational letterheads to all school districts in Oswego county and to health practitioners in Oswego and the surrounding area, I feel that they were well-versed in the services OCO is now able to provide. Informing these people and the positions that they hold put them in the situation to help OCO by recommending the program to those that would benefit from it.

With their new grant they are able to assist three times as many teens as they were able to before. This simple expansion has made them want to get their name out more and that is exactly what I was there to help them with. Even if one person has benefited from the information I was able to put out then I feel that I have done my part. It is a great feeling to know that my words are out in the “real” world for an actual purpose.

Life in Words in the World: Eng 485

I am a Senior at SUNY Oswego enrolled in English 485: Words in the World. This class has opened my eyes to what I can do with the education I have received for the past four years. As a student with an English major I have done more reading and writing than I ever imagined. Having a range of experience from creative writing classes to film genre classes, I have done a lot with critiquing. Critiquing is the genre I am most interested in.

Although this class doesn’t allow me to do much critiquing, I am however doing things I never thought I would be. As of right now I am in the middle of a project with a local business holding the position of a writing consultant. Within this position I am doing work outside of a classroom setting in more of a ‘real-life’ situation. This is what I’ve been waiting for, a chance to actually provide something for more than my professor.

The local business I work with was just one of the options that was given to us. This was another part of the course which I liked, options. After receiving the news that I would be working with Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) I was anxious to get started and haven’t slowed down yet. It has been a great experience.

The main reason I enjoy being part of this partnership with OCO is that my work is being actually used for a purpose. As I am getting great feedback back from them, it is making me more confident in my writing than I have been in the past. We all know that professors look at your writing to grade it and they are looking for the negatives of your writing. Don’t get me wrong, that is definitely not all they are looking for but that is their job. Within this course my writing does get reviewed and ‘corrected’ but it is just so I get  chance to improve what I am doing outside of the classroom.

I was late in signing up for the class so did not really know what I was getting into. I have come to learn that it is great that I made that happen. I have produced documents in this class that are going to be of great help to me when graduation in May comes around, and even before. As I look ahead to graduation I know I should get started on getting out documents such as resumes and cover letters. It is a scary and intimidating time in my life and this class is getting my moving in the direction I need.

In this class we do a lot of peer editing. The peer editing and group discussions I have encountered have improved my personal documents to the point where I feel comfortable sending them out to businesses I hope to work for. I would recommend this class to anyone who is looking to get their life after graduation started.

I had no idea what I was going to be looking for after graduation. I figured I was going to be settling for a secretarial job out of college and who knows where I would go from there. I am glad I signed up for this class because I am tired of being asked “What are you going to do with an English major?”. This course has given me a concrete portfolio of writing samples that I can provide to companies and a thought of what I can actually do with my english degree.
